{"id":103975,"date":"2025-05-14T01:25:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T01:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taylorroot.com\/?p=103975"},"modified":"2025-07-02T04:49:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T04:49:09","slug":"middle-east-legal-market-update-may-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/srgroup.highrise.digital\/nl\/market-insight\/middle-east-legal-market-update-may-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Middle East legal market update &#8211; May 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide post-content-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-i-m-seeing-in-the-middle-east-legal-market-right-now\">What I\u2019m seeing in the Middle East Legal market right now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve had so many conversations lately &#8211; both with lawyers considering a move to the Middle East and with firms struggling to hire &#8211; that I thought it might be helpful to share some reflections from the recruiter\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The legal market in the Gulf, particularly in places like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Riyadh, is incredibly active, but it\u2019s also evolving &#8211; and fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-work-is-there-but-so-are-the-challenges\">The work is there \u2013 But so are the challenges<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s no question that legal work in the region is booming. Saudi Arabia is pushing massive projects forward, while Dubai and Abu Dhabi continue to be a hub for international finance, arbitration, and cross-border deals. From construction disputes to regulatory reform, a lot is happening, and firms (and in-house teams) need the talent to keep up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the talent market is tight. Firms want lawyers with top-tier training and international experience, but who also understand the regional landscape. That\u2019s a rare combo, and it\u2019s pushing everyone &#8211; candidates, firms, and recruiters to think more creatively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-localisation-is-real-and-it-s-not-just-a-buzzword\">Localisation is real, and it\u2019s not just a buzzword<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is continued emphasis on hiring and developing local talent. And it\u2019s not just a policy &#8211; it\u2019s becoming a real priority for many clients. At the same time, international experience is still valued, especially in more technical practice areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re a lawyer thinking about moving into the region, the appetite is there for strong talent, but firms are rightly being thoughtful about fit, culture, and long-term value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-candidates-i-speak-to-are-asking-different-questions\">The candidates I speak to are asking different questions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, the tax-free salaries still catch people\u2019s attention. But that\u2019s not enough on its own anymore. More and more lawyers are asking me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What\u2019s the work-life balance really like?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How is the market maturing?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s the team culture?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can I build a real career here, or is this just a stepping stone?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-best-recruiters-in-this-market-aren-t-selling\">The best recruiters in this market aren\u2019t \u201cselling\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Middle East legal market is not one-size-fits-all. There are subtle dynamics at play &#8211; regulatory, cultural, logistical, that make it different from recruiting in London, Sydney, or New York. That\u2019s why recruiters here can\u2019t afford to be transactional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have to be a sounding board rather than a salesperson. Sometimes I\u2019ll say, \u201cActually, now\u2019s not the right time,\u201d or \u201cThis firm isn\u2019t the right fit for you culturally,\u201d because getting it wrong helps no one. And honestly, that\u2019s how you build real relationships in this space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-final-thought\">Final thought<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Middle East legal market is exciting, full of opportunity, and changing fast. But it\u2019s not without complexity. If you\u2019re thinking about making a move or trying to grow your legal team here, my advice is simple. Speak to someone who knows the terrain.
